Information
This home design represents an experiment in re-purposing used shipping containers for prototype detached single family homes. This model uses three standard containers. A standard shipping container’s dimensions are 8 feet by 40 feet, and have a height of 9.5 feet. As a result of global trade most goods sold in the United States are imported overseas in these containers, and these containers often sit empty in ports and harbors without purpose. Many of them only being used for one trip, one way. Millions of shipping containers remain in this condition without further purpose, until the concept of using them for housing became possible.
Shipping containers can be re-purposed quite easily since their steel frame is designed to handle the intensities of ocean travel and they are able to be stacked and locked together up to eight containers tall. Using these standard containers as a building block for housing can offer a multitude of configurations and options for customization.
